Closing a crypto exchange account: what happens to your KYC records?

Leaving an exchange does not necessarily erase your identity records. Save usable reports, check balances and subscriptions, and separate account closure from a data deletion request.

Closing a crypto exchange account: what happens to your KYC records?

Closing a crypto exchange account does not necessarily erase the KYC records you submitted when you joined. If you want to leave a platform, treat account closure, saving your own records, and requesting deletion of personal data as separate tasks. That distinction helps you avoid losing access to statements while assuming your identity documents have already disappeared.

This guide is for individual exchange users preparing to close an account voluntarily. It uses Coinbase and Kraken's published instructions as examples; your platform, product and location determine the process available to you.

What closure and deletion actually change

There are three different outcomes to check:

Action What you need to confirm
Close the account Whether access ends permanently and whether any balances or pending activity prevent closure.
Request personal data Which records the export includes, how to retrieve them, and whether you can open the files.
Request deletion Which categories can be removed now and which must remain under the provider's retention rules.

Coinbase's privacy data request FAQ distinguishes access, export and deletion requests. It says requesting deletion of identity or legally required information may require account closure, while records subject to retention requirements remain until those requirements are met. A closure confirmation therefore does not, by itself, establish that all personal data has been erased.

Save usable records before giving up access

Start by deciding what you would need if a payment, transfer or account entry needed explaining later. Save available statements, trade and transfer histories, fee records and relevant support correspondence. For a practical inventory, use CLIDM's guide to saving and reconciling crypto transaction records.

Open each export before proceeding. Check the date range, account coverage, currency labels and time zone. An empty file or a report covering only recent activity will not answer an older transaction query. If something is missing, resolve that while you still have normal account access.

A personal-data request is also worth considering, but do not assume it replaces your transaction reports. Coinbase's FAQ says its machine-readable export does not include data that is not machine-readable, giving a photo ID image as an example. Check the export's scope instead of assuming it contains every document you ever uploaded.

Keep these files in private storage with access limited to the people who need them. Avoid placing identity documents and financial histories in publicly shared folders.

Check balances, unfinished activity and subscriptions

Coinbase's account closure instructions require clearing balances, completing pending transactions, downloading reports and cancelling Coinbase One where applicable. Its final closure flow requires sign-in and two-step verification, and it describes closure as irreversible. Follow the current prompts for your own account; do not discard your sign-in method before you finish.

Kraken's closure guide likewise says to remove funds first and links to account-history exports. It specifically warns that closure does not cancel subscriptions and directs users to the Apple or Google app store for those subscriptions. Check how you subscribed rather than assuming the account's closure stops billing.

If an outgoing transfer is already under review, work through that issue before planning the final closure. CLIDM's guide to responding to a withdrawal review explains what to record and how to follow the platform's request. Do not assume a closure request will clear a withdrawal hold.

Why KYC records can remain after you leave

Kraken's Privacy Notice, section 11, states that it retains information for permitted purposes, including legal obligations and claims. It gives five years after the relationship ends as an example for certain anti-money-laundering records, and also says some information may remain longer. This is not a promise that every identity document disappears on a particular anniversary.

The useful question is therefore specific: which data about my account remains, why is it retained, and what determines when it can be deleted? Ask the provider for an answer tied to your account and applicable policy. A generic retention example cannot establish your personal deletion date.

Make a separate, precise privacy request

Reach the provider through its official site or app. If you are uncertain about an address, follow the checks for verifying an exchange's official website before signing in.

Coinbase's data privacy guidance directs users to its Privacy Rights Dashboard in a web browser. It notes that some information, such as marketing data, can be requested for deletion without necessarily closing the account. Choose the request that matches your purpose.

When contacting the provider, state whether you want to stop using the account, obtain a copy of your data, request deletion, or do all three. Ask for:

  • Confirmation of the account's closure status.
  • The data categories deleted and the categories retained.
  • The reason and applicable period or criteria for continued retention.
  • Any remaining action you must complete and how to track the request.

Save the reference number and the response. If the reply only confirms closure, follow up on the unanswered privacy questions rather than treating the two requests as equivalent.

Before your final confirmation

Make sure your exports open, necessary transfers have completed, subscription billing has been checked, and the platform has explained what closure will do. Then retain the closure confirmation separately from the response to your privacy request. These records answer different questions and may arrive at different times.
